Craftsmanship, Care, and Quality: Spotlight on David Arber at Kay Builders

Kay Builders is known for quality. Every Kay Builders home is built with the finest quality materials and craftsmanship of Lehigh Valley’s 3rd generation, family-owned builder.
But how exactly does Kay Builders ensure that every home is built with quality? We sat down with David Arber, Kay Builders’ Director of Quality Control, to learn how his experience and skills help him make sure every Kay Builders home is built up to our high standards.
A Life Focused on Quality from the Start
David Arber has been focused on quality construction his entire life. His grandfather was an avid woodworker who built propellers for the S.S. United States. His woodworking tools were passed down to David’s father, who introduced them to David. “As far back as I can remember, I was in the workshop building stuff,” David recalls.
David started in construction at the age of 18 working under the supervision of an “old school” carpenter who believed in doing the job right. David was part of a team who renovated a beautiful old estate that included an 11,000 square foot home (with a 6,000 square foot addition) plus pool houses and docks.
“I learned a lot about quality from this experience working with some of the greatest carpenters in the world,” David says.
Quality on the Big Jobs and in the Smallest Detail
While working construction, David got into wood carving and began making miniatures including toys and collectibles. These carvings are intricate and extremely detailed. He once carved a nativity set that would fit on a quarter! “I really enjoy this detail-oriented work.” David says, “Someday I plan to retire to spend more time on these kinds of projects.”
David started working for an Australian carpenter who was extremely focused on quality. “He had one standard: excellence!” David says, “If it wasn’t perfect, we’d tear it out and start over.”
David moved to the Lehigh Valley and bought property near Bear Mountain. He and his family raise farm animals including pigs, chickens, and turkeys. He splits cords of wood to heat his home, and bakes homemade bread.
It’s a great life, but he was commuting from the Lehigh Valley to South Jersey for work. So he applied to Kay Builders in October 2019 to use his skills to help build quality homes right here in the Lehigh Valley.
Bringing His Quality Focus to Kay Builders
David started at Kay Builders as a warranty technician. He would meet with homeowners, review their concerns, gather information and report back. Then he would go back out to make any necessary repairs.
Many of these meetings with homeowners would take place around the one-year mark. “We go out when the home is done settling and make any needed repairs under the warranty.” David says, “I really enjoy helping people and making sure they are happy with their home.”
David’s skills allowed him to work quickly which meant he could help more homeowners in any given day. “I really enjoy going above and beyond for people to make them happy.” David says, “Their home is such a major purchase. We’re selling hopes and dreams. It’s very important to me that they’re satisfied. If I see something wrong that the owner didn’t notice, I’ll still fix it. I want their home to be perfect.”
A New Position as Director of Quality Control
David’s experience as a warranty technician was the perfect background to his new position as Kay Builders Director of Quality Control.
“My experience looking at our homes at the 1-year mark has been very valuable.” David says, “In my new position, I can address issues up-front to prevent them from happening in the first place. I make sure all the materials we use are within tolerance and meet our high standards. This way we are focused on quality from the start to avoid issues and increase the satisfaction of our buyers.”
This focus on quality can be seen in Kay Builders internal reviews that happen before the buyer takes ownership of the home. Problems are addressed up-front so the home is as perfect as possible.
David’s history is helping him in his new job too. “All my experience with high-end, quality craftsmanship really helps me a lot in my current position.” David says, “I attack everything with the same level of excellence from the easiest job to the most difficult in every stage of construction.”
“For the better part of my life, I’ve been blessed to be around the best craftspeople, going back to my grandfather and father.” David says, “I am committed to keeping that quality standard going forward. I want my legacy at Kay Builders to be the quality of everything I’ve done. This quality will last for years and will be passed down through the generations.”
