To help you get started, here are some decorating ideas that will make your new home festive, cozy, and fun for the holidays.

Pick Your Holiday Theme

With so much room in your new home, you might be tempted to just start decorating to fill that space. But if you want a coordinated look, start by choosing your theme.

For a traditional holiday theme that never goes out of style, choose red, green, and gold colors, plaid patterns, vintage ornaments and candles. For a more contemporary look, go with white, silver, and blue colors, sparkling ornaments, and icicle lights.

You could also match your home’s exterior styling for your holiday decorating. If you have a Modern Farmhouse exterior, you could keep that style going inside with neutral tones with green and red accents, galvanized metal, chalkboard signs, and mason jars filled with holiday decorations. Mix natural wood and white finishes to achieve that modern farmhouse feel. Many people choose to place the tree near that front window for an inviting coziness and classic holiday postcard vibes. Get the right sized tree for your ceilings and leave a little room at the top. For example, if your ceilings are 9-10ft, an 8 foot tree will look just right.

If you have some open spaces that don’t have furniture yet, don’t worry. Place a small wooden table there with a mini tree. Or just add a basket with holiday blankets for instant warmth. (That’s both festive and functional!)

Add coziness with a beautiful scented statement candle, or warm up the kitchen with some battery-operated luminaries spread out on the island.

Your new home probably has stainless steel or black kitchen appliances, so decorate around them. Place a bowl of ornaments on the counter that match your kitchen’s hardware or get dishtowels that work with your holiday theme.

Your fireplace is the perfect spot to hang some stockings. Don’t have a fireplace? Create a “stocking wall” where you can hang stockings like holiday artwork.
