Holiday Decorating Ideas to Make Your New Home Shine

Holiday Decorating Ideas to Make Your New Home Shine

November 24, 2025

The holidays are almost here, and your new construction home is a blank canvas for you to decorate! Kay Builders homes are designed to be both comfortable and cozy, which makes them perfect for the holidays. But where should you start to decorate in a way that best represents you?

To help you get started, here are some decorating ideas that will make your new home festive, cozy, and fun for the holidays.

Pick Your Holiday Theme

With so much room in your new home, you might be tempted to just start decorating to fill that space. But if you want a coordinated look, start by choosing your theme.

For a traditional holiday theme that never goes out of style, choose red, green, and gold colors, plaid patterns, vintage ornaments and candles. For a more contemporary look, go with white, silver, and blue colors, sparkling ornaments, and icicle lights.

You could also match your home’s exterior styling for your holiday decorating. If you have a Modern Farmhouse exterior, you could keep that style going inside with neutral tones with green and red accents, galvanized metal, chalkboard signs, and mason jars filled with holiday decorations. Mix natural wood and white finishes to achieve that modern farmhouse feel. If you opted for a Craftsman exterior, natural  holiday elements that could compliment that might include pine garland and dried orange slices for a more rustic vibe.

Introduce your theme in your entryway so guests feel welcomed right from the start. Consider hanging a perfectly-themed wreath on your door (maybe use command hooks to protect that brand-new door!) and compliment that with a matching doormat.
Add to the exceptional curb appeal of your new home's exterior with the adornment of a holiday wreath.

Work with Your Home for The Best Holiday Look

Your modern home likely has some big open spaces that are perfect for decorations. Your open-concept living area, big front window, and modern staircase are all great locations for a large decoration like a tree. Many people choose to place the tree near that front window for an inviting coziness and classic holiday postcard vibes. Get the right sized tree for your ceilings and leave a little room at the top. For example, if your ceilings are 9-10ft, an 8 foot tree will look just right.

If you have some open spaces that don’t have furniture yet, don’t worry. Place a small wooden table there with a mini tree. Or just add a basket with holiday blankets for instant warmth. (That’s both festive and functional!)

Let your new home by Kay Builders shine with a dazzling display of outdoor lights to accentuate all of its best features.

Highlight Your Home’s Architectural Features

To accentuate outdoor curb appeal, you can include planters with evergreens and bows and add roofline lights for a polished, festive look. (If you choose LED lights, you can keep the lights up and change the color throughout the year based on the season!)

Your modern staircase is a big focal point and the perfect place for holiday decorations. Frame the banister with thick, faux garland and warm lights. Lace a simple ribbon into the garland that matches the color scheme you’ve chosen. Your stairs will look festive, cozy, and elegant.

Your kitchen is naturally a central gathering space in your home, so make it shine extra bright during the holidays! Add a long wooden tray or a cluster of bottle brush trees. Add coziness with a beautiful scented statement candle, or warm up the kitchen with some battery-operated luminaries spread out on the island.

Your new home probably has stainless steel or black kitchen appliances, so decorate around them. Place a bowl of ornaments on the counter that match your kitchen’s hardware or get dishtowels that work with your holiday theme.

Your fireplace is the perfect spot to hang some stockings. Don’t have a fireplace? Create a “stocking wall” where you can hang stockings like holiday artwork. Accent this with a table with some decorations that fit your theme. Choose small, intentional accents that add meaning instead of just filling the space with holiday clutter.

Hang festive stockings above your fireplace in your new home.

Make Your First Holiday a Memorable One

If this is your first holiday in your new home, celebrate that with some special touches. Create a custom ornament with your new address to hang on your tree. Place a framed “First Christmas in the New House” print on your entry table so guests can celebrate with you. Create a photo wall of pics from your first few months in your home and wrap that in a thin string of lights. This can become an annual tradition where you update the pics to celebrate both treasured memories as well as recent events.

As you celebrate the holidays in your new home, these holiday touches will help you make the home truly YOURS.
