Discover Lehigh Valley’s Top Activities This Winter

The winter season always brings a sense of excitement and wonder into the air, especially within the Lehigh Valley. While the chilly weather might have you wanting to curl up with your fuzziest blanket and relax on the couch, winter break is right around the corner—and with the kids home, there is so much around your Kay Builders community for you to explore. Read on to see a few of our favorite winter activities to add to your calendar this season. 

Enjoy the fresh air

Throughout the Lehigh Valley, there are a number of stunning destinations to visit for incredible views, and one of the best ways to experience them is by hiking to the viewing spot. If you are only able to add one destination to your hiking itinerary, we recommend Trexler Nature Preserve. Located just a few miles outside of Allentown, this nature preserve offers 18 miles of hiking trails that the whole family can enjoy together. 

If you have time for one more hike, however, the Blue Mountain Loop trail is 5.5 miles and takes you through a section of the stunning Appalachian Trail. Generally the hike takes individuals or groups under 3 hours to complete, and you can rest assured that you will never be disappointed with any of the views around you if you choose to visit. 

Another holiday tradition we love to add to our calendar each year is driving around and gazing at all of the Christmas lights on display, and the communities we build in throughout the Lehigh Valley offer a number of destinations for residents to visit. Lights in the Parkway continues through Saturday, December 31 and offers a truly magical experience for the whole family to enjoy. The Lehigh Valley Zoo is also a great place to visit with their Winter Light Spectacular event happening through Sunday, January 1. Containing over 1.2 million lights and breathtaking displays, you will never be disappointed when you make the trip.

Bundle up and hit the slopes

While hiking is a great outdoor activity that all of your loved ones can enjoy together, it’s not the only way to stay active this winter break. Throughout the Lehigh Valley, there are a number of spots you can easily travel to in order to experience the joy of speeding down a ski slope with breathtaking mountain views surrounding you. 

The Blue Mountain Resort in Palmerton offers an ideal setting for all of your loved ones to enjoy no matter if you ski, snowboard or if you prefer a good old-fashioned snow tubing excursion. Another great spot to spend a day on the slopes is Bear Creek Mountain Resort in Macungie, and with snow tubing available and a full spa also featured throughout the resort, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy at this pristine destination. 

Plan an afternoon for the adults 

While family time is especially important during the holiday season, it’s also a great time for the adults to have a night out as well. Around the Lehigh Valley, there are a number of different wineries that offer an ideal way to round out a busy winter day. If you’re looking for something with a little eclectic charm, the Sleepy Cat Urban Winery in the West End of Allentown is the perfect spot to frequent. With wine flights offered, fun events to enjoy and seasonal food and drink menus to look through—you will always be in for a treat. 

If you want a sit-down experience overlooking the rows of vineyards throughout the area, it’s always a great idea to explore the first wine trail created in Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail. With incredible wineries featured along the trail such as Vynecrest Vineyards & Winery in Breinigsville, Blue Mountain Vineyards & Cellars in New Tripoli, Tolino Vineyards and Franklin Hill Vineyards in Bangor, and Black River Farms in Bethlehem—the delicious local wines to sample and the lively atmospheres makes each visit to any of these locations well worth it.
