History and Traditions
Northampton has a rich history in cement and canal transportation leading to its boom in populations and industry by the end of the 19thcentury. In 1829, it was ordered that construction would begin on the canal that would later run coal and other goods Northbound from Philadelphia and would run with the Lehigh River. In 1895, Atlas Portland Cement opened followed soon by Lawrence Portland Cement Company quickly followed by 3 other cement companies, bringing a boom to the small area by the 1900 census allowing for the creation of Borough of Alliance in 1902 to be renamed Northampton in 1909.
Today, taking a drive down Main St in Northampton and you can’t miss Northampton’s only commercial movie theater The Roxy and its bright lit-up marquee sign. Opened in 1921, the Roxy began as a stage for vaudeville acts while moving to motion pictures. The 1950’s and 1970’s brought live music and shows back to the Roxy Theater with acts such as Bobby Vinton, Bobby Rydel, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, KISS and John Belushi to name a few. The Roxy theater is surrounded by restaurants and small shops.
Sports fans and non-sports fans alike will be able to enjoy the almost 100 year long tradition of the Thanksgiving Day football game and weeklong festivities between Northampton Senior High School and Catasauqua High School. This tradition is held with pride for both communities and include, powder puff game, pep rally, bon fires and Thanksgiving Day morning football.
